**Overview:**
We are looking for a dedicated and knowledgeable Community Forest Steward to join our team. This role is essential in advancing our community's forestry initiatives by utilizing the Project Learning Tree (PLT) curriculum, adhering to the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) plant care specialist guidelines, and promoting the principles of human health and natural environments as outlined by the Eppley Center for Parks and Public Lands. The steward will focus on tree inventory, GIS mapping, mitigating the heat island effect, increasing tree canopy, and maintaining the public trail system.
**Key Responsibilities:**
1. **Tree Inventory and Assessment:**
- Conduct thorough inventories of community trees, documenting species, health status, and maintenance needs.
- Utilize GIS technology to create and update maps that track tree locations, health, and canopy coverage.
2. **GIS Mapping:**
- Develop detailed Geographic Information System (GIS) maps to analyze tree distribution and identify areas needing increased tree canopy.
- Use spatial data to inform strategies for expanding urban tree cover and improving community green spaces.
3. **Addressing the Heat Island Effect:**
- Educate community members about the heat island effect and the importance of trees in mitigating its impacts.
- Implement initiatives aimed at increasing tree canopy in urban areas most affected by heat, promoting cooler environments.
4. **Increasing Tree Canopy:**
- Collaborate with local organizations to plan and execute tree planting events that enhance community canopy coverage.
- Engage volunteers and residents in hands-on activities that promote tree care and stewardship.
5. **Public Trail System Maintenance:**
- Oversee the maintenance of public trails, ensuring they are accessible, safe, and integrated with surrounding natural environments.
- Promote the benefits of trails for physical health and well-being, encouraging community use and appreciation of natural spaces.
6. **Community Engagement and Education:**
- Conduct workshops and educational sessions based on the PLT curriculum to raise awareness about the ecological and health benefits of trees and trails.
- Foster community involvement in forestry and trail initiatives, encouraging residents to become active stewards of their environment.
7. **Monitoring and Reporting:**
- Regularly assess the health of trees and trails and report findings to community stakeholders.
- Document and evaluate the impact of forestry and trail initiatives on community well-being and environmental health.
**Qualifications:**
- Experience in forestry, environmental science, or a related field; knowledge of tree biology and care practices is a plus.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate diverse community members.
- Passion for environmental conservation and community health, with a commitment to promoting sustainable practices.
